DeBraun Hampton, a Baylor receiver who followed Lagway from Florida, said that the former Gator quarterback kept quiet to most about what he was going through during a frustrating 4-8 season for UF. Lagway notably lived by himself and took mostly online courses last year.
“After that LSU game, he came out Monday and acted like nothing ever happened,” Hampton told Dellenger. “What didn’t I hear? Everything negative that you can imagine. Everything. In Gainesville, it’s hard when you’re not winning.”
Nikita was “disgusted” with Florida fans’ criticism of Lagway, per Dellenger, noting that he played through multiple injuries and was never fully healthy with the Gators.
“That’s not a crybaby. That’s a baller,” she said.
“It bothered me to hear people say he’s weak or injury-prone,” Nikita said. “I just want people to know, this season right here is going to be the first of my son’s career since 10th grade where he’s healthy and injury-free.”
A 12-game starter, Lagway completed 63.2% of his passes last season at 6.7 yards per attempt, throwing for 2,264 yards (188.7 yards per game), 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Lagway and the Baylor Bears face Auburn to open the 2026 season.
