Seeing bullpen implosions in my dreams these days …
Losing repeatedly to the Brewers under any circumstances is annoying. Doing so to fully and finally allow any dreams of the division to slip away is depressing. And doing so by blowing leads, wasting a big offensive night against Jacob Misiorowski, and leaving open huge questions about how competitive this team can be going forward, is numbing. That was Misiorowski’s worst start of the year, and yet the Cubs wound up losing by four runs. It’s not as if there were a question about the Brewers being the better team, but they sure have been emphatic about it. By the way, though, it wasn’t that the Cubs’ bats did a good job. It’s just that the mound was soft and the weather was bad:Jacob Misiorowski was slipping on a road mound again tonight. We’re going to keep putting him out there.” X-rays on Jacob Webb’s forearm were negative at the ballpark after the game, but you’ll forgive me if that affords much relief. For one thing, even a mere bruise can be so painful that it impacts performance for a long time. For another thing, how many times have we heard about negative X-rays at the park, only to later find out that there’s a hairline fracture when a guy gets a CT scan or whatever? I’m not saying that’s going to happen here – I do not have any extra visibility into Webb’s arm – I’m just speaking generally. I have learned not to be actually relieved in these situations until the guy is actually back out on the mound looking normal. At least Caleb Thielbar looked really good. I’m not counting on him to get to a place where that same confidence is there like last year – the fear of the big homer will persist at this point, I’m sorry to say – but he continues to do everything right when he’s not, you know, giving up the homer.
