The Tuscaloosa City Council discussed the logistics of rezoning 4.6 acres of land located at 3311 and 3327 Hargrove Rd. E.
Last month, Clay Smith of Longleaf Engineering brought the idea to rezone the land to build 24 townhomes to the Planning and Zoning Commission. Initially, Smith’s plan was denied by a vote of 6 to 3. On Tuesday, almost a month later, the request was brought before the full city council.
Smith was denied on account of the issues of parking, traffic and trash management, along with not fitting in with the character of the neighborhood that resides at the location he wants to build the homes at. As of now, there are no specific approved plans for the land Smith wants to rezone.
Karen Boothe, a Tuscaloosa citizen, said she was against the construction of the townhomes in her subdivision because of traffic that townhomes will generate.
“The way they have it is so that those cars are exiting onto our Broadview Road. Almost right across from my driveway. We have enough problems with traffic even trying to get off on Hargrove Road,” Booth said.
Jaque Dunn, a Tuscaloosa citizen from the same subdivision as Booth, said it would be inconsiderate to the people of Hargrove Rd. to build the townhouses.
“I don’t think they come and ask, ‘Do you care about us putting this in your neighborhood?’ Like I said, I love my neighborhood. It’s not the best, but it’s gorgeous to me,’” Dunn said.
Dunn said Tuscaloosa should represent beauty for all of the citizens, not just the ones who want to make money.
“You should have the choice of what’s being erected in your neighborhood — what’s being erected in your city,” Dunn said.
Isaiah Harper, who also lives in the same neighborhood as Booth and Dunn, does not believe that the townhomes would be a good fit for the subdivision.
“This type of development is not fit for us. I’m not against townhomes; I’m not against apartments, but there are places for those. Affronting a community that existed for a long period of time, that’s not where it belongs,” Harper said.
Despite the drawbacks of the citizens, the city council voted to move forward with discussions for the townhomes.
Smith will have to repropose his idea to the Planning and Zoning Commission and will have to meet with the people who will be most affected by the building of the townhomes.
