2026 JOSE FINKEL TROPHY
August 31st – September 4th São Paulo, Brazil SCM (25m) SC World Championships Qualifier Qualifying Criteria ResultsThe Brazilian Interclub Absolute Swimming Championship – José Finkel Trophy 2026 began this week in São Paulo, with over 400 athletes vying for the chance to represent the nation at this year’s Short Course World Championships.
Swimmers are doing their best to meet the qualification standards listed below and, through the first two days of the competition, we’ve already seen several make it happen while multiple records have also bitten the dust.
Highlighting the women’s 100m butterfly on day one was former University of Miami Hurricane Giulia Carvalho, with the versatile Brazilian busting out a new South American record in the event.
Carvalho stopped the clock at a speedy result of 56.06 to get to the wall nearly a second ahead of the field, with Beatriz Bezerra claiming silver in 57.02 and Luanna Oliveira bagging the bronze in 57.84.
As for Carvalho, she split 11.95/14.23 (26.18)/14.36/15.52 to get the job done, with her new lifetime best erasing the former South American standard of 56.31 Daiene Dias of the same nation established at the 2018 SC World Championships.
Both Carvalho and Bezerra cleared the 57.40 ‘A’ standard needed to qualify for this year’s edition of those championships, headed to Beijing, China in December.
The men’s side also saw a South American record get erased, as Leonardo Alcantara blasted a new lifetime best of 3:37.46 to top the 400m freestyle podium.
Posting splits as seen below, Alcantara’s performance easily cleared the former SA record of 3:39.06 Venezuelan Alfonso Mestre put on the books at the 2021 SC Worlds.
Entering this competition, Alcantara’s career-swiftest 4free outing checked in at the 3:47.65, notched two years ago, so the Alabama swimmer rocked that right off the books to erase Fernando Scheffer‘s former Brazilian mark of 3:39.10 from 2018.
Runner-up Eduardo Moraes also cleared Scheffer’s former national record, taking silver in 3:38.97 to qualify for Beijing, as did Stephan Steverink.
Steverink, a future University of Kentucky Wildcat, also made the cut, courtesy of his time of 3:40.25, good enough for bronze.
