An Indiana mother and her 8-year-old daughter were killed by a driver fleeing a traffic stop in the southwest part of the state.
According to Indiana State Police, a deputy in Pike County was traveling westbound on State Road 64 Saturday evening after receiving a call of a domestic violence incident unfolding at a gas station.
As the deputy approached the gas station, he saw a vehicle that was reportedly involved in the incident, with the driver speeding away from the gas station and forcing another motorist off the roadway.
The driver then attempted to strike the deputy’s squad car, and forced the officer to take evasive action. The deputy then turned around and began pursuing the speeding vehicle.
At that time, a 41-year-old woman was driving a minivan eastbound on the roadway, according to police. The driver of the Camry then served into the oncoming lane and struck the minivan head-on.
According to police, 41-year-old Amanda Wertman was pronounced dead at the scene, as was the fleeing suspect.
Wertman’s 8-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle along with three other children, with the group returning from a Girl Scout trip to an area amusement park according to NBC affiliate WFIE. Her daughter was taken to a hospital in Kentucky, where she was pronounced dead.
The other three children were also hospitalized, and all three are expected to recover.
Indiana State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
