A man was reportedly mauled to death by a pack of dogs while taking a smoke break during work in a small Illinois town.
According to police and numerous local news reports, a 68-year-old man was taking a break while working on a rental property in Washington Park, Illinois — located just outside of St. Louis — when multiple dogs attacked him, dragged him across the street and into a ditch.
The attack took place late Thursday night on North 49th Street near Forest Boulevard, according to FirstAlert 4, which reported responding officers shot several of the dogs, who had become aggressive, but the pack ultimately fled into a nearby wooded area.
NBC affiliate station 5 On Your Side reported the man was found “severely injured,” but was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Police told the outlet on Friday that they were still looking for the animals.
“The dogs are stray dogs,” Washington Park Police Chief Tony Tomlinson told 5 On Your Side. “We have been out looking for the dogs, however have not ran into them yet.”
Police said an investigation into the attack remains ongoing.
