“When Fran Walsh (Jackson’s wife and filmmaking partner) and I decided to write a script based on this case, which no one has really seriously re-evaluated over the past 40 years, we really wanted to take it back to the human beings,” Jackson told Bobbie Wygant at the time. “And to say, ‘Well, they weren’t evil.’ I mean, they were two 15-year-old girls.”
“You know, they did this extraordinarily tragic thing, but there had to have been some forces at work within their friendship or outside of their friendship that led them to this action,” he added.
Jackson brought Juliet and Pauline’s dreamlike inner world to the screen with haunting effect. Within just a few years, Winslet would become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, while Lynskey has gone on to standout roles in Two and a Half Men, Yellowjackets, and beyond.
