Dangerous heat with “stifling” humidity and the chance for strong to severe storms are in the Chicago forecast Tuesday for the start of meteorological fall.
“First day of September feeling like the middle of summer,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said.
Starting at 9 a.m., a heat advisory will go into effect for all of northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana, with heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees expected. The hottest readings, the National Weather Service said, will be in Dixon, Joliet, Kankakee, Paxton, Pontiac and Watseka.
The heat advisory will remain in effect until midnight. Muggy conditions will continue through Wednesday, with even higher heat and humidity possible.
Severe thunderstorm risk
Tuesday also brings the chance for isolated strong to severe storms, but the likelihood is low.
“Most of us will get through today completely dry,” Scott said.
According to the NWS, there’s a ten to 20 precent chance of severe weather, but the “more likely outcome is no storms occur.”
Still, the Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of the area, from Chicago to the north and west suburbs under a level one or “marginal” risk of severe weather. That includes parts of McHenry, Lake, Boone and Cook Counties.
If storms do develop, it would be in the afternoon, Scott said, around 3 or 4 p.m. The greatest threat would be damaging winds up to 65 mph and large hail.
Periodic storm chances remain in the forecast Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
