Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad discussed on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a number of projects and proposals for developing nature reserves in a manner that ensures the sustainable use of natural resources and supports ecotourism.
She also stressed the need for regular follow-up of investment projects in nature reserves to ensure compliance with environmental requirements and standards, along with establishing a continuous environmental monitoring plan.
The remarks came during the 76th meeting of the board of directors of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) which discussed a number of issues related to developing the environmental work system, supporting environmental projects and investment, maximizing the sustainable utilization of natural resources and following up on the implementation of decisions and recommendations issued at previous board meetings. These efforts aim to enhance institutional performance and support the state’s efforts to protect the environment and improve citizens’ quality of life.
The meeting was attended by CEO of the EEAA Sherif Abdel Rahim as well as representatives of the ministries of defense, industry, foreign affairs and international cooperation, planning and economic development, water resources and irrigation, health and higher education and scientific research in addition to a number of environmental experts and officials from the ministry of local development and environment.
At the beginning of the meeting, Awad affirmed the ministry’s commitment to continuing to develop the environmental work system and improve performance, as well as supporting projects that contribute to environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources.
She stressed the importance of coordination and integration among all relevant authorities and accelerating the implementation of environmental policies and programs to ensure that plans are translated into tangible results on the ground.
She explained that the board began its session by approving the minutes of meeting No. 74 and reviewing the implementation status of the decisions and recommendations issued by it, as well as the implementation status of the decisions of meeting No. 75.
This reflects the ministry’s commitment to continuously monitoring implementation rates and enhancing institutional efficiency.
Awad also pointed out that, as part of the state’s drive to promote environmental investment and encourage the private sector to participate in developing natural destinations, the board discussed several projects and proposals for developing nature reserves in a manner that ensures the sustainable use of natural resources and supports ecotourism.
The board reviewed the technical and financial assessments, permit durations and technical and financial proposals concerning several applications submitted by companies seeking to invest in nature reserves, while preserving their geological and environmental characteristics.
Awad further stressed the need for regular monitoring of investment projects in nature reserves to ensure compliance with environmental requirements and standards.
She called for a continuous environmental monitoring plan, environmental awareness programs and measures to encourage visitors to adopt sustainable practices, while ensuring that environmental impact assessment studies are conducted and coordination is maintained with the EEAA and relevant authorities to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of reserve resources.
Awad directed that new environmental projects should focus on generating tangible benefits for citizens and visitors by improving the quality of services provided in nature reserves, developing infrastructure and facilities and enhancing the visitor experience. This would increase the attractiveness of environmental destinations and support ecotourism while ensuring full protection of nature, biodiversity and natural resources.
Awad also directed efforts to create a favorable environment for the private sector to expand environmental investments and encourage projects that generate economic returns and provide job opportunities for members of local communities, while ensuring compliance with environmental requirements and standards. This would strike a balance between supporting investment and maximizing the benefits of natural resources while protecting and sustaining them.
