News by : (Parade) -

Dolly Parton’s 1973 hit “Jolene” has been covered by artists including Miley Cyrus, Olivia Newton-John, and Kelly Clarkson, but there’s one singer the country music legend always dreamed of hearing take on the iconic track.

Parton passed away at 80 on August 25 from an undisclosed battle with cancer. In her memory, Beyoncé‘s mom, Tina Knowles, shared that Parton wanted her daughter to perform the well-known track.

The Grammy Award-winning artist sang her own rendition of the song for her 2024 country music album, Cowboy Carter.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, Knowles shared a clip of Parton on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in 2022. She captioned the Instagram post, “I love that Dolly manifested this ♥️???.” In the video, Noah asked Parton if she had an “update” about her request for Beyoncé to sing “Jolene.”

“No. I don’t know if she’s even got the message,” Parton said at the time. “But wouldn’t that be killer? I think she’s fantastic and beautiful and I love her music.”

“I would just love to hear ‘Jolene’ done in just a big way, kind of like how Whitney [Houston] did my ‘I Will Always Love You,’ just someone that can take my little songs and make ‘em like powerhouses,” Parton continued. “So that would be a marvelous day in my life if she ever does do ‘Jolene.’”

Beyoncé’s cover was released two years later. Parton was featured on the album through spoken introductions and joined the singer for the song “TYRANT.”

After Parton’s death, Beyoncé shared a heartfelt tribute on her website.

“You were the barometer. The north star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious. You taught so many lessons on how to be uniquely oneself,” Beyoncé wrote in a statement. “I am grateful for your art, your heart, your generosity, your humor, your entrepreneurship.”

“I’m honored that I had the privilege to work with you. I will treasure that forever. Thank you for your profound impact on the world. You are an angel who has made this world a happier place because of your joyful art,” she continued. “You are truly one of one. Rest peacefully.”
