The search intensified late Monday for a suburban Bartlett woman missing in Nepal after last week’s catastrophic flooding.
Poonam Thakkar was on what her family described as a trip of a lifetime when the floods struck last week.
“We are very determined to find my sister,” said Gunjan Thakkar, Poonam Thakkar’s sister. “My other sister…she’s already in Kathmandu. She landed this morning with two of our cousins, and they’re determined to find her.”
Gunjan Thakkar said her sister was traveling as part of a group of around 50 people with the company Himalayan Glacier. The entire group remains missing.
The travel company has posted updates on its Facebook page, along with pictures of the missing travelers.
U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, has called on the Department of State to use every available resource to support search-and-rescue efforts and help account for those still missing. He said a local team in Nepal is coordinating with authorities on the ground.

NBC Chicago reached out to the U.S. Embassy in Nepal, but hadn’t received a response as of Monday afternoon.
The youngest girl in the family, Poonam Thakkar has dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship. She works in consulting, and her motto has always been “work hard – play harder.”
“She loves to travel, and that’s the reason she was in Nepal,” her sister said. “She has that attitude, work hard and travel harder.”
“Please keep our family and all these other families in your prayers,” relative Esha Sachdev said. “We’re just very desperate to get our loved ones back.”
The family is also calling for U.S. and Canadian officials to assist with search-and-rescue efforts.
More than 950 people were killed in the flooding disaster in Nepal and Tibet, and more than 4,400 others remain missing.
