NEWARK, N.Y. — Labor and delivery services at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital closed on Monday night.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with people outside the hospital who said it’s sad and scary to see the services close. At 11:59 p.m. on Monday night, patients will be redirected to Rochester General Hospital, about 35 miles away.
Newark-Wayne Community Hospital said over the last couple years it couldn’t keep the staffing needed to perform safe labor and delivery care. One concern people brought up was how the weather might impact the ability to get patients safely to Rochester.
Maryanne Nicosia-McCarthy said it’s a 45-minute drive, but that’s on a clear day.
“Anybody who’s having a delicate pregnancy, this is going to impact them dramatically. I feel very sorry for them. It’s it’s sad. It’s it’s what should be a happy time. And sometimes with difficult pregnancies or emergencies or if, God forbid, they’re in a car accident, it’s not up the street anymore,” Nicosia-McCarthy said.
RRH said it’s already made delivery plans with existing patients and has been reaching out to pregnant patients with deliveries planned close to Monday. Other outpatient women’s health services will continue through the Women’s Center in Newark and Obstetrics and Gynecology in Geneva.
People said they’re hopeful the birthing center can return eventually. RRH also said lowering birth rates played a part in the closure.
At one point, Newark-Wayne was delivering more than 700 babies per year. Last year that number dropped below 400.
Newborn surgery and postpartum services will be suspended on Sept. 3. There are still four birthing centers open in Monroe County, the most out of the nearby counties.
There are two in Onondaga County in Syracuse. There is one in Oswego, Ontario and Livingston counties.
