GORHAM, N.Y. — New information is emerging about the investigation into a warehouse fire that happened one year ago.

The warehouse was storing expired hand sanitizer despite warnings that a fire could be catastrophic. While the cause remains a mystery, officials now have a better idea of what it took to clean the contaminated site and where the investigation is headed.
Concrete and overgrown weeds are all that remain of the Eco Operations warehouse site in Gorham. A year ago, the 57,000-square-foot building was an inferno, fueled by pallets of flammable hand sanitizer.
News10NBC’s Brett Davidsen returned to the site, where he met with Town Supervisor Dale Stell.
“I think it was the end of April that the EPA felt the site was clean,” Stell said.
According to an EPA report on the cleanup, it took five months and 61 truckloads totaling almost 2,300 tons of debris and contaminated soil to finally declare the site clean. The total cost to taxpayers was more than $1.6 million.
All the while, there was no sign of Eco Operations owner Eduard Zaydman.
“The fact that he hasn’t returned to Gorham, to our knowledge at least, I guess that says a lot about him and his actions,” Stell said.
The town of Gorham had cited Zaydman prior to the fire for violating zoning and fire codes. In March, a fire in New Mexico happened at another warehouse operated by Zaydman, also fueled by expired hand sanitizer.
Davidsen reached out to Zaydman, but he did not return phone messages.
A year later, investigators still don’t know what ignited the fire. While considered suspicious, they were never able to determine the cause.
In an email, the Ontario County Sheriff said they continue to investigate with the District Attorney’s Office in conjunction with state and federal authorities. He said they expect to release an update in the near future, hopefully by mid-September.
Davidsen asked Stell what he has been able to learn from the investigations.
“Really nothing other than it’s not been closed,” Stell said.
In the meantime, there are no signs that the business owner plans to revive the site.
“It would have been nice if he’d have stopped in and said, geez, I’m sorry that this happened, but just never heard a word from him,” Stell said.
The sheriff said they are still looking for tips and asked anyone with information about the fire to contact his office at 1-800-394-4560.
