President Trump’s Lake Ontario to Lake America rename: What it means for local lakeshore communities ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The debate over President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America continues to spark heated discussion across the region.

In an AI-generated clip posted to his Truth Social account over the weekend, President Trump walks up to a “Lake Ontario” sign, kicks it down and replaces it with a “Lake America” sign before breaking out in a dance.

While the video is theatrics, many are wondering whether signage around the lake will have to be changed and what it could cost taxpayers.

Here’s the deal: The controversial order changes how federal agencies refer to the lake, but it does not require New York communities to adopt the new name. It appears that NY Governor. Kathy Hochul has no intention of even considering it, “this is just silliness, this is just a huge distraction, everybody knows it,” Hochul said. “Lake Ontario was named after indigenous people, a word from the Iroquois nation that has nothing to do with Canada…Lake Ontario was already named Lake Ontario before it became a province in Canada so, I don’t know what he’s trying to do other than deflect from the fact that prices keep going up, gasoline is through the charts and he’s losing the war with Iran,” Hochul added.

News10NBC drove around local communities that border the lake. Aside from the Lake Ontario Parkway, many of the signs just say “Lake” and don’t specify “Ontario.”  The City of Rochester, Monroe County and several local municipalities have said they will not be making any changes to the name and/or signage.

However, there is a lot of scientific research happening in and around the lake and some of that is tied to federal contracts.

On Monday, News10NBC investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke met a team from the University of Rochester at Ontario Beach Park. Lisa Delouise, principal investigator for the Lake Ontario Center for Microplastics at UofR, explained their work. “We’re collecting water samples on the east and west side of the pier here at Charlotte Beach and we’re analyzing it for microplastics,” Delouise said.

The work has been going on for two years and is federally funded. “We’re funded by the national institutes of health and the national science foundation and the official title of our center is called the Lake Ontario Center for microplastics in human health so, we might have to change the name in order to be, to continue getting our funding,” Delouise said.

Those with ties to the federal government are still working out the logistics and requirements.

Over the weekend, Google updated its map application to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America for users in the United States. The company says the decision is based on its practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. People outside the U.S. will still see the name “Lake Ontario” when using Google Maps.
