Liam Lawson's surprise return to Red Bull may have looked remarkably comfortable from the outside, but the New Zealander has revealed that getting physically settled in the RB22 was anything but straightforward.
Drafted in at short notice to replace the injured Isack Hadjar at the Dutch Grand Prix, Lawson produced one of the strongest performances of his Formula 1 career.
He qualified just 0.115 seconds behind Max Verstappen and then converted that impressive pace into seventh place in the race, finishing as the leading driver outside McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari.
Yet beneath that polished performance was a weekend of adaptation, with Lawson having to quickly adjust to a machine that differed considerably from the Racing Bulls car he normally drives.
A different car, a different challenge
The RB22 may have shared its DNA with the Racing Bulls machine, but Lawson immediately discovered that switching between the two cars involved far more than simply adapting to a different aerodynamic package.
"There are always things; I mean the car is completely different aerodynamically," Lawson told reporters.
For a driver, however, familiarity extends well beyond how a car generates downforce. Every cockpit is tailored around its driver, from seating position and controls to the small details that allow them to feel completely at home behind the wheel.
Lawson had spent the season developing that relationship with his Racing Bulls car, only to find himself suddenly climbing into Verstappen's Red Bull for one of the most demanding weekends on the calendar.
"And there are always things, personally as drivers, we try and make our cars as comfortable for us, and there are some things that when you switch a car for a weekend, you just can't automatically change those things,” he added.
"There is stuff in this car that isn't the same as [the Racing Bulls] in terms of driver comfort that I've had to get my head around.
"Without being too specific, that's the stuff that has probably been the most challenging."
Hadjar's Monza comeback still uncertain
Lawson's impressive stand-in performance has also left Red Bull with an intriguing selection question heading into this week's Italian Grand Prix.
The team has yet to confirm whether Hadjar will be fit to reclaim his seat at Monza, although the Frenchman has said he is hopeful of returning after making what he described as a rapid recovery from his wrist injury.

For Lawson, though, the biggest takeaway from Zandvoort may be that he was able to overcome a cockpit that never quite felt like home and still produce a performance that demanded attention.
If another opportunity comes his way at Monza, he will at least know that the biggest challenge may no longer be the unfamiliarity of the car – but what Red Bull asks him to do with it.
