A reunion celebration at Washington Park late Saturday night was interrupted by gunfire as a mass shooting erupted, leaving one person dead and 14 others injured.
“I’m tired. And I’m not talking about a tired where I can get a good night’s sleep,” 20th Ward Ald. Jeannette Taylor said Sunday, reacting to the violent scene during what witnesses said was a reunion party for the Robert Taylor homes.
Police were initially called to break up a crowd when, they said, shots were fired.
“I heard shooting,” one witness said. “I thought it was fireworks, but it was not fireworks. I see everybody running and falling and dropping.”
A 35-year-old man died after being shot multiple times, Chicago police said. Fourteen others, both men and women, ranging in age from 21 to 47 years old, were also shot. As of Sunday evening, three victims’ conditions were unknown.
Remnants of that gathering, from charcoal to bottles and cups, were still visible in the park after the celebration was interrupted by gunfire.
Park officials were cleaning up debris in the subsequent hours.
Attendees told NBC Chicago they gather for this event every year.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses, who didn’t want to speak on camera, said the shots were fired from across the street. Kids were present at the park, they said, for several family events that were also taking place.
“Washington Park is a beautiful park…” Taylor said. “We need to be able to keep our spaces, our parks, and our lakes, safe.”
NBC Chicago spoke with Mayor Brandon Johnson on Sunday, who called for accountability for the people responsible.
“The challenge is not just people coming together,” he said. “It’s that, unfortunately, we have some incredibly bad actors that still exist in our city.”
There have been notable changes to public safety staff this year, including the firing ofGarien Gatewood, the deputy mayor of community safety and the retirement of Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. Fred Waller is serving as interim superintendent.
