1955 Rock Song, Whose Name Needed To Be Changed, Was Chuck Berry’s First Hit ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

“Maybellene” was a 1955 rock and roll song by the iconic Chuck Berry. It rose all the way to number five on the Best Sellers chart and made it to number one on Billboard’s Rhythm and Blues chart.

The song was originally called “Ida Mae” because it was adapted from a country song called “Ida Red” from Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. However, Leonard Chess from Chess Records was not a fan of the name and wanted it changed.

“And that was a problem, so nobody could think of a name,” pianist Johnnie Johnson told  NPR. “We looked up on the windowsill, and there was a mascara box up there with Maybellene written on it. And Leonard Chess said, Why don’t we name the damn thing ‘Maybellene?’“

Berry was happy with the new title. He said, “‘Maybellene’ has the same rhythm as ‘Ida Red,’ like dah-di-dah, you know, ‘Maybellene,’ ‘Ida Red,’ you know. So rhythm I had, but I had somebody else’s title, you know. So that’s how ‘Maybellene’ came up.”

He also spoke about the first time he heard his song being played on the radio. “Passing by a tailor shop that I got my high school graduation coat made at, and I passed by the shop until the song played out, you know; I didn’t want anybody to see me listening, you know, to — but it was ‘Maybellene’ I was listening to. And when it played out, you know, that was my last walk past the door of the place. And I flew home — you know, I was about 20 blocks from home — and told everybody, I heard it, I heard it, I heard it. I heard me sing.'”

Berry died in 2017 at the age of 90.
