Will the Denver Broncos keep three QBs this year after Sam Ehlinger’s great performance against the Minnesota Vikings?
After playing their Week 3 preseason game on Friday night, the Broncos now have an extra day compared to other teams to cut down to 53 players.
But those cuts should start coming in fast and furious today and into Sunday’s 2 p.m. MT deadline.
Will the Denver Broncos keep three QBs after Sam Ehlinger balled out?
Sam Ehlinger had a bit of a rough preseason.
That continued on Friday night against the Vikings as his first pass of the game was an interception.
Ehlinger, who came in for Jarrett Stidham in the second quarter, was late on his throw but decided to toss it anyway and it was easily picked off by Kahlef Hailassie of the Vikings. It was a dumb decision and a huge mistake.
Luckily for the Broncos and Ehlinger, it was the last mistake he made all night.
Running back Cody Schrader helped him settle down as the Broncos moved the ball downfield for a field goal on their next drive. Then, in the 2-minute offense, Ehlinger came alive. His 25-yard pass down the sideline to Dane Key was a thing of beauty, right on the money. That pushed the Broncos into the red zone, where he found Jaleel McLaughlin for a 20-yard touchdown on a crossing route.
Just like that, Denver led 20-6 at halftime.
But the Broncos didn’t rest on their laurels, Ehlinger helped the offense manufacture two monstrous drives for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The first was a 17-play, 85-yard drive that saw a lot of Schrader running the ball. He also caught the 14-yard pass for the drive-capping score.
Then, they went 93 yards in only three plays as tight end Justin Joly ran free like a wild bronco on the plains; Ehlinger found him and the rookie galloped 88 yards to pay dirt.
When it was all said and done, Denver dominated Minnesota 34-6 and Ehlinger’s stat line sparkled. He finished going 15-20 for 233 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 INT; a 131.9 passer rating.
But was it enough for the Broncos to actually keep three quarterbacks?
Denver usually only keeps two QBs on their initial roster
Broncos fans have become somewhat annoyed by Stidham’s play this preseason. It’s likely partly because of how he literally fumbled away the AFC Championship game last January. Some of them even want Denver to keep Ehlinger over Stiddy.
That’s definitely unlikely. Sean Payton seems to really like Stidham and trust him with the offense.
So, is there a possibility they keep both of them on the roster along with QB1 Bo Nix?
Yes, but it’s a small chance.
Last year, the Broncos kept only Nix and Stidham on the 53-man roster. That was true in 2024 and even 2023, when it was Russell Wilson and Stidham.
Instead, Payton and George Paton will likely look to cut and stash Ehlinger on the practice squad, then elevate him at some point during the season if and when they need to.
Keeping a third quarterback would mean cutting another young player from a different position group. Denver has multiple talented young linebackers—Red Murdock, Taurean York, Karene Reid—and they’d likely be more valuable than keeping a third quarterback. Similarly, the Broncos need depth at safety, especially after Taylor Rapp was signed and then cut to deal with matters at home.
It’s likely the Broncos start cutting players today, so we may know sooner rather than later whether or not Ehlinger will make the 53-man roster.
Denver has to cut 37 players to go from 90 to 53 over the next 30 hours.
