In 1993, Clutch released their debut studio album, Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths, but mainstream success didn’t exactly follow.
That is, until adult cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head gave the band a major dose of exposure by featuring the music video for album opener “A Shogun Named Marcus” on the show.
Before Family Guy, Beavis and Butt-Head developed a cult-like following for its similarly offbeat sense of humor, but with a twist: both characters were raging metalheads obsessed with rock music.

Clutch had such an original sound that listeners couldn’t help but take notice—and the MTV spotlight helped put the otherwise little-known band on the map.
“Getting validation from Beavis And ButtHead was much more gratifying. It showed that people do like this band even if your sales may not reflect fame and fortune,” said Clutch vocalist Neil Fallon.
Fast forward more than 30 years later, and Clutch is still going strong with the same four original members who recorded their 1993 debut album, making not only the band’s unique sound instantly recognizable, but the fact they’ve stuck together all these years something of a unicorn in the rock world.
For the first time in 4 years, fans can sink their teeth into Clutch’s new music as they recently released “The Drifter Returns” and Fallon’s powerhouse vocals come roaring in from the jump.
Fallon, who gives the band its unmistakable edge, spoke with Metal Hammer last winter teasing new songs with no official timeline, so this week is the big week fans have been waiting for.
“We’d rather wait and make it as good as it can be. That’s where we are at. There are a number of songs in the can, but I’m not going to predict when it might be released.”

Not only is there a new banger, Clutch is hitting the stage beginning September 12, with a monthlong gap between shows before picking back up October 16:
