FAIRPORT, N.Y. — The Fairport boys soccer team has a history of success. Over the past two seasons, the Red Raiders were on a 37-game winning streak before they lost in the state championship last year. This year, head coach Bill Teasdale will have to build his team around a younger core.
“Well, they have a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm. And I think they understand it’s a time of opportunity for them,” said Teasdale.
There are only two starters returning for Fairport, meaning there’s a lot of pressure on the newer guys. Senior goalkeeper Jared Mulley said they’re up to the task.
“I think every single one of them know that there’s some big shoes to fill, but I think they’re all ready and they’re all ready to step into those boots,” Mulley said.
With such an inexperienced roster, there are a lot of starting spots up for grabs. Teasdale said the competition for those spots in practice is a good thing.
“There’s a lot of competition for the other spots in the team. But so far, you know, they’re all working hard to try to get on the field,” said Teasdale.
Limited time
This team is battling the clock. The Red Raiders play their first game on Thursday, Sept. 3 on the road. For that reason, practices have to be very intentional.
Teasdale said, “It’s not easy, we have to be very efficient with our time in our training sessions.”
There are lots of areas he wants to get cleaned up before the season officially starts.
“We have to work on defending; we have to work on possession; a lot of tactical work restarts. And, we have about a week to do it,” said Teasdale.
That makes for a busy couple of training sessions for Fairport, but Teasdale trusts his captains to help him get it done. Junior Brock Stephany is one of those captains who tries to lead by example.
The captains
“I put in the work and all the teammates respect that about me, and it makes them want to work harder. It makes them want to work harder. Same as Trevor and Mulley. They make me want to work harder,” Stephany said.
Hard work and accountability are the themes this group is trying to live by this season.
“I hope players are accountable. I think that’s one of the biggest things. I make sure everyone’s focused on what’s ahead,” said Mulley.
The best part about this group is that they like and respect each other.
“You can be a great player, but if you don’t get along you can only get so far. This first practice showed me that we’re all getting along really well,” said Mulley.
Right now, the Red Raiders are just focused on week one.
“We’re only focused on the next game because the next game is the most important. And we’re not going to look in the future because we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future,” said senior Trevor Scoppa.
The Red Raiders will get this season started on Sept. against Churchville-Chili on the road.
