ROCHESTER, N.Y. — President Donald Trump’s executive order on renaming Lake Ontario is getting pushback from local leaders.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic went to Ontario Beach Park and learned that a name change is not coming to the park. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello posted on social media that he was enjoying Abbott’s at Ontario Beach Park looking over Lake Ontario. He ended the post with “Thank you for your attention to this matter” and signed it “AJB,” which is how President Trump ends all his posts on X.
The county confirmed there is no chance of a name change for the park.
Another question is whether signs on the Lake Ontario State Parkway will be changed. Adelisa saw at least six signs with the Lake Ontario State Parkway logo on her drive from WHEC to the beach. She asked the Department of Transportation if that’s a possibility and how much just one of the small signs would cost, but has not heard back yet.
Rochester City Council is sticking with Lake Ontario and signed a proclamation to make it official. City Council President Miguel Melendez is expected to call on the Trump administration to reverse its decision to rename the lake.
News10NBC also reached out to the International Joint Commission, which includes the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board, for comment. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which controls the Lake Ontario and minor tributaries watershed, was also contacted. Neither has responded yet.
The Seneca Nation is now weighing in on the issue. To see the full statement from the Seneca Nation and other statements from other leaders, click here: Trump signs order renaming Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’: Local leaders react
