What to know about the cyanobacteria found in Seneca Lake ...Middle East

GENEVA, N.Y. — A form of cyanobacteria has been found in Seneca Lake. The nonprofit Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association is asking people to be cautious around the bacteria, but says there isn’t enough information yet to determine whether it’s toxic.

The association recently got photos of unusual debris near the Lakeshore Landing area. The Finger Lakes Institute eventually identified it as benthic cyanobacteria from the genus Oscillatoria. Both groups are working with the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to learn whether the bacteria is a health concern and whether it’s new to the lake.

What is benthic cyanobacteria?

Unlike the harmful algal blooms, which usually float near a lake’s surface, benthic cyanobacteria grows on the bottom of the lake and attaches to rocks and other materials. Some types of cyanobacteria can produce toxins, so the association is asking people to avoid it. If you see growths similar to the photos in this story, you can take photos and send them to the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association.

Researchers at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry have found both toxic and non-toxic forms of cyanobacteria in the Finger Lakes. The researchers identified a toxic type in Honeoye Lake.

More coverage of growth lakes

News10NBC has reported on several cases of algal blooms and invasive plant concerns at local lakes this summer. That includes algal blooms in Conesus Lake in Livingston County and Canandaigua Lake near Kershaw Beach.

The DEC says a number of factors can lead to algal blooms. A lot of sun, plus warm and calm water, helps the blooms thrive. The more nutrients they have — like phosphorus and nitrogen — the more likely they are to appear.
