Dolly Parton might have been a giant in the music industry, but throughout her life, the legendary singer-songwriter maintained a deep-seated love for reading.
Consuming an average of 50 books a year, Parton’s favorite books ranged from classic children’s books to more recent romantic epics. According to People magazine, however, one of the singer’s favorite story was one she heard throughout her childhood.
As mentioned by People, Parton once revealed in an interview that one of the most impactful stories her mother ever read her was none other than the classic 20th century children’s story, The Little Engine That Could.
As Parton remembered it, hearing her mother tell the now beloved tall tale helped instill a feeling of perseverance throughout her life, giving her the resolve to pursue many of her greatest ambitions.
“On many occasions, when my dream seemed far away, my mama would tell me the story of the Little Engine to comfort and encourage me,” Parton said. “While I listened to her, I would close my eyes and think of myself as the Little Engine and just start saying over and over again, ‘I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.’ It gave me strength, it gave me hope, and it gave me the courage to keep chasing my dreams.”
