It was quite the summer for rising distance star Zayda Miehl, as the 16-year-old had a breakout performance of sorts at the U.S. National Championships in Irvine before winning three medals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver.
At Nationals, Miehl dominated the early heats of the women’s 1500 freestyle, knocking more than 16 seconds off her personal best time in 16:15.93, which ultimately earned her 5th place overall and slotted her up to 14th all-time in the U.S. girls’ 15-16 age group.
Just over two weeks later at Junior Pan Pacs, Miehl was unstoppable in the 1500 free final on the opening night of competition, clocking 16:08.91 to win gold by a massive 16-second margin and move up to #8 all-time in the age group.

In terms of splitting, Miehl was 8:35.26 to the feet at the 800-meter mark in the 1500, undercutting the personal best time of 8:35.56 she set en route an 8th-place finish at Nationals in the 800.
At the end of Junior Pan Pacs, Miehl battled it out with Japan’s Haruno Tanimoto in the girls’ 800 free final, settling for silver in a time of 8:30.07 after Tanimoto inched ahead of her on the penultimate 50 and held on coming home in 8:29.88.
That time ranks Miehl 18th all-time in the girls’ 15-16 age group in the 800 free.
In the 400 free, Miehl set a best time of 4:15.16 at U.S. Nationals, and then followed up by clocking 4:12.47 in the prelims at Junior Pan Pacs to move into 65th all-time in the 15-16 age group.
In the final, she snagged the bronze medal in a time of 4:13.46, out-touching Japan’s Ruka Yamazaki (4:13.49) for the last spot on the podium.
