Coincidentally, the song is also what Parton last posted about, 10 days before she died, to celebrate the hit’s 43rd anniversary. “43 years of ‘Islands In the Stream!’ ? @_kennyrogers,” Parton simply captioned the clip of footage that was taken of the two in 1988.
Following the news of her passing on Tuesday, a post by Kenny Rogers’ family and team, shared to his official Instagram account, paid tribute to the “9 to 5” singer and their famed collaboration.
“When the two of you sang about being islands in the stream who together had found peace unknown, having real love for each other as true friends who would always stand by each other, and how you just can’t make old friends, it was always as genuine as it could possibly be…coming straight from the heart and reflecting what you both felt for each other,” the statement read, in part. A video of the two singing together was also shared by the account. According to Billboard, the song topped multiple charts for weeks. It also earned the singers an Academy of Country Music Award, an American Music Award, and a Grammy nomination. ?
