49th NATIONAL JUNIOR OLYMPIC CUP (JOC) SUMMER SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
August 22nd – August 26th Tokyo Aquatic Center LCM (50m) ResultsThe 49th National Junior Olympic Cup (JOC) Summer Swimming Championships concluded in Tokyo yesterday, but not before 17-year-old Shin Ohashi further made his presence known in the breaststroke events.
The multi-World Junior Record holder represented Osaka Hiriakata while taking on the open 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke events, as well as the discipline as part of the squad’s men’s medley relay.
Individually, Ohashi fired off a speedy time of 58.85 to take the 100m sprint, with his performance falling only .51 outside the WJR of 58.34 established at the Pan Pacific Championships. There in Irving, the prodigy’s performance garnered him the silver medal behind American Van Mathias, who clinched gold in 58.02.
Splits for Ohashi’s outing in Tokyo consisted of 27.89/30.96 to nail a new meet record, hacking nearly a second off the old benchmark of 59.73. The next-closest competitor and only other racer to clear the 1:01 barrier was Yusei Imaizumi, who nabbed 59.46.
Ohashi also handily defeated the 200m breast domestic field, producing a solid performance of 2:09.30 to get to the wall over two and a half seconds ahead of his peers. The teen’s lifetime best and WJR remains at the 2:06.59 put on the books at the Japan Swim this past March.
Ohashi’s most impressive performance at this JOC competition came in the medley relay, however, where he posted one of the fastest breaststroke splits in history.
The dynamo opened in 26.70 and closed in 30.65 to check in with a head-turning leg of 57.35. That helped his team earn the bronze medal behind winners Itoman Tokyo and runners-up Aichi Toyokawa.
Ohashi’s 57.35 made the Japanese ace the 5th-fastest breaststroke relay split performer of all time, with his mark representing the 13th-best performance ever and the swiftest outside of a major elite international championship.
