ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A partial lunar eclipse is happening on Thursday night, and the weather is expected to cooperate for viewing in the Rochester area.
A partial lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, and the moon passes through only part of Earth’s dark inner shadow. The eclipse gets underway around 10:33 p.m. At its peak at 12:12 a.m., the Earth’s shadow will cover over 90% of the moon’s surface, giving the moon a red tint. Unlike the total solar eclipse that Rochester had in April of 2024, you won’t need eclipse glasses for viewing.
First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris is tracking the cloud cover ahead of the eclipse. Cloud cover around midnight is expected to be only 28%, so that will be helpful for viewing. Watch the video in this story for more details.
