Parts of US-41 in the far north suburbs were blocked early Thursday morning after two semi trucks smashed into each other overnight.
Total Traffic & Weather Network reported the crash occurred about 2 a.m. at US-41 and Martin Luther King Drive in North Chicago.
NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said local police and fire responded to the scene and extricated one driver, who remains hospitalized in stable condition. The other driver was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Photos and video from the scene showed one semi smashed into the rear of the other, with major damage to both and first responders on site.
As of 5:30 a.m., the crash was still under investigation. with both directions of US-41 at Martin Luther King Drive blocked.
“This is still causing problems,” Martin said, with traffic and backups expected for those who commute out to or in from Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie in Wisconsin. “What a mess here.”
Traffic was expected, Martin said, with drivers encouraged to take Green Bay Road as an alternate.
