The Denver Broncos could see some starters play on Friday night when they wrap up the NFL Preseason, but starting quarterback Bo Nix is one of those guys that you should expect not to play.

After Wednesday’s practice, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said it would be unlikely that Bo Nix plays this Friday against the Vikings in the team’s final preseason game.
“He probably won’t play in this game,” Payton said.
Nix played and looked good in his small sample size last week against the Green Bay Packers — between that and what Payton has seen from Nix in practice, that’s more than enough for him to hold off Bo until Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs.
This also gives the Broncos the chance to figure out who Bo’s backup will be this upcoming season, with Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger set to receive the reps on Friday.
Payton said the Broncos haven’t made a decision yet regarding that job, but did acknowledge that whether or not the team keeps three players at this position is one of the bigger questions the team is facing.
“If there were like eight roster questions, it’s one of the eight as you’re looking at building your roster,” Payton said.
Stidham has received a majority share of the early reps compared to Ehlinger, and it’s unclear on Friday whether or not the QBs will alternate quarters, halves, or series to series, but we’ll find out then.

Broncos hoping for clarity on Jonathon Cooper situation ahead of roster cuts
As the Denver Broncos prepare to make a handful of roster decisions to formulate the best 53 possible, the team is waiting for clarity on outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper’s situation stemming from two arrests this offseason that have led to domestic violence charges.
“You always want clarity, but I think we’ll find out soon, and you’ll find out probably when I do,” Payton said.
His arraignment is currently set for Aug. 31, 2026, just one day after the Broncos trim their roster down. He’s been present and active with the team at training camp and has played in both preseason games so far.
There is a chance he lands on the commissioner’s exempt list, but that could come after his arraignment hearing on Monday in Douglas County Court, where Cooper will enter his plea.
Broncos release safety Taylor Rapp, waive WR Kyre Duplessis, sign two players
Veteran safety Taylor Rapp made his first appearance at Broncos practice on Monday, but was not spotted on Tuesday. On Wednesday, there was some clarity surrounding why.
The Broncos released Rapp, but that was to allow him time to deal with a personal matter, and there is a strong belief that he’ll sign with the Broncos again here soon, according to Payton.
“Taylor Rapp came in, and I spent some time with him,” Payton said. “He needs a little time at home, and I completely get what he’s needing. There’s a good chance — better than a good chance. I know how he felt being here. I think sooner than later that’s going to happen. This obviously took precedence.”
The Broncos waived WR Kyre Duplessis on Wednesday before practice. Between that and the Rapp move, it created two roster spot opportunities for outside names.
Denver signed defensive tackle Israel Antwine and offensive tackle Foster Sarell. Antwine played quite a bit of football over the last two seasons in the UFL with the Houston Gamblers, and came into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2022 and spent some time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sarell brings some veteran experience to the table. He appeared in 43 games for the Los Angeles Chargers over the course of the last four years, including one start for them last season. Sarell played 177 snaps in 2025 (43%), according to Pro Football Reference.
With the Broncos banged up a little bit on the offensive line, Sarell adds another body who has a chance to impress in limited action on Friday against Minnesota for a potential practice squad spot.
