Hours after Dolly Parton’s death at the age of 80 was announced on Aug. 25, it was revealed that the “Jolene” legend died after “a brief battle with cancer.”

Her family has not disclosed what form of cancer the singer had.
Years before her death, Parton literally stood up against cancer. The “I Will Always Love You” singer and Sheryl Crow were featured in the one-hour television Stand Up to Cancer fundraising special, that aired on Aug. 15, 2025, from Nashville, that aimed to unite the country music community with cancer research.
The special was available on more than 30 different platforms, including all four of the major U.S. broadcast networks, which donated one hour of commercial-free primetime.
Although Parton was a long-time advocate for cancer research, who has donated millions of dollars and participated in fundraisers for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation, she had not publicly disclosed any personal experience with cancer until her family announced her cause of death on Aug. 25.
In 2023, the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation presented her the Promise Award recognizing her philanthropic efforts.
“Dolly’s commitment to aiding in the fight against breast cancer has helped us raise awareness for this cause and reach audiences around the world,” said state executive director Joshua Daniel at the time. “In presenting her with the 2023 Promise Award, we wanted to salute her for all that she has done for this cause.”
