Cubs Prospects Report | August 26, 2026

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs dropped their series opener with the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) on Tuesday largely due to some pitching struggles in the early and late stages of the ballgame. Fresh off being demoted back to Triple-A in favor of Daniel Palencia, Javier Assad got the start for the Cubs. After a scoreless top of the first and a BJ Murray RBI triple in the bottom half of the inning, things looked promising. But in the top of the second, Assad allowed a game-tying RBI single, and in the top of the third the Storm Chasers got to him with a solo homer and an RBI double, making it a 3-1 lead.

No runs were scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Omaha added another solo home run off Tyler Ferguson. Then, in the eighth, they broke the game open with four runs off Evan Taylor, making it a 8-1 score.

The Cubs didn’t go away easily, though. In the bottom of the eighth, Murray doubled in two more runs to cut the deficit to 8-3. After the Storm Chasers added one more in the ninth, Murray picked up his fourth RBI of the game on a base hit, than Chas McCormick brought in two of his own on an RBI single, making it 9-6. But that was as close as the comeback got, and Iowa fell by that score.

Notable Performances

BJ Murray | 3-5, R, 4 RBI, 2B, 3B Chas McCormick | 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB Owen Ayers | 1-4, 2 R, BB

FINAL: Storm Chasers 9, Cubs 6 | Box Score

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

It was a hit parade for the Knoxville Smokies as they collected a win over the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers) last night. The Smokies combined for 14 hits as a team en route to a 9-4 victory. RBI singles from Carter Trice and Andy Garriola in the first and second innings made it a 2-0 lead for Knoxville. After the Shuckers brought in a run on a sac fly to make it 2-1, the Smokies answered with a pair of runs in the third on a throwing error an a sac fly of their own.

Biloxi kept coming back, though. After their run in the second, they went on to score a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to bring the game to even at 4-4. In the sixth, Knoxville would have an answer offensively and put an end to the scoring on the mound. First, they took a lead on a passed ball that scored Alex Madera. Then, Miguel Useche singled in another making it 6-4 advantage. Two batters later, Ariel Armas chipped in with a sac fly putting the lead at 7-4.

The score stayed at 7-4 until the ninth, when Knoxville added a pair of runs for good measure on a Kane Kepley two-run homer, giving the Smokies a 9-4 lead, and that held as the final score.

Notable Performances

High-A South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs dropped a close one 4-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) in their series opener on Tuesday. Wisconsin got to Jostin Florentino in the bottom of the first on a two-run double with one out, giving them a 2-0 lead. But in the third, the Cubs fired right back to tie the score on an Alexey Lumpuy two-run blast.

Two innings later, the Timber Rattelers took the lead for good with an RBI double off Edwardo Melendez, then added another in the seventh on a solo home run off Luke Alwood. In the top of the eighth, Josiah Hartshorn tried to pull South Bend back into this one. Leading off the inning, Hartshorn took a 3-1 pitch out to center field for his 16th homer of the season, bringing the Cubs within a run. Unfortunately, that’s as close as they’d get. The Cubs got the go-ahead run on in the eighth, but couldn’t bring it in, then went down in order in the ninth, and this one ended 4-3 in favor of the Timber Rattlers.

Notable Performances

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans went back and forth with the Augusta Green Jackets (Braves) on Tuesday night and ultimately came out with a close, 5-4 win. Augusta struck first in the bottom of the first with an RBI double off Jubrayker Salaya, making it 1-0. After that, though, Salaya tossed three scoreless frames to close out his outing.

The Pelicans evened the game up in the third on a solo home run from Darlyn De Leon, then took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth using RBI single from Corey Nunez and De Leon again. But Augusta had a quick answer. In the fifth, and RBI double off Julio Valdez made it 3-2. Then, in the sixth, Valdez walked in the tying run with the bases loaded and two outs, tying the game at 3-3.

The score stayed that way until the ninth, and that’s when Jan Luis Reyes came up clutch. With two outs and runners on second and third, Reyes ripped a line drive single to left field, scoring both runners and giving the Pelicans a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Henriquez allowed a two-out solo homer to cut the lead to 5-4, but held on for the save with a strikeout two batters later.
