ROCHESTER, N.Y. — NASA is preparing to launch a space observatory on Sunday that could revolutionize our view of the cosmos, and Rochester is playing a role.
Engineers from Rochester’s L3Harris helped to build the optical eye of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. That eye is a critical component of the telescope’s mission of creating the largest and most detailed maps of the cosmos ever produced. Scientists are looking to capture views of billions of galaxies stretching across the universe.
The telescope will also be used to search for clues about dark energy, the force believed to drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. On its website, L3Harris called dark energy one of science’s greatest mysteries, and said electronics manufactured in Rochester will help scientists to investigate it.
“Building Roman required solving engineering challenges that pushed the limits of optical precision, stability and reliability,” said Jeff Hanke, President, Space Systems, L3Harris Technologies, in a statement. “Roman represents one of the most ambitious observatories ever built, and we’re incredibly proud that the optical system engineered by L3Harris will enable discoveries scientists haven’t even imagined yet.”
Roman’s field of view is about 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope, and it can survey the universe nearly 1,000 times faster. After it launches, it will travel nearly one million miles from Earth to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, a region with the ideal gravitational balance for deep-space observations.
When will the launch be?
NASA plans to launch the observatory at 7:26 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA will have live coverage on its website starting at 6:20 a.m.
L3Harris also helped with Artemis II launch
This is far from the first space mission that L3Harris has helped with. The company contributed more than 100 mission-critical pieces from launch to landing for Artemis II, which sent four astronauts farther into space than any humans have ever gone.
In addition, the windows on the capsule were polished by a company in Chili. What’s more, two of the Artemis II astronauts wore aviation sunglasses from a Rochester company leading up to the launch while at the Kennedy Space Center.
