ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul is sharing her reaction to the Supreme Court ruling that could create a path to implement President Donald Trump’s proposed mail-in voting changes.
Trump’s executive order calls on his administration to create lists of eligible voters and orders the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to people on those lists. New requirements released on Friday would forbid the Postal Service from sending mail ballots from any state that does not comply with Trump’s order. However, it remains unclear whether the changes can be put in place before the midterm elections.
In a statement, Hochul said the president’s executive order “does not get to rewrite [state] election law or suppress the right to vote with the stroke of a pen.” The statement continues:
“New York challenged this unlawful executive order from the very beginning, and we’ll continue the fight to protect New Yorkers’ sacred right to vote and the integrity of our elections. New York’s elections are secure. Our laws are clear. And the Constitution does not give the President the authority to override the longstanding role of states in administering their own elections.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with 22 other attorneys general, sued to try to block the executive order. After the ruling, James said her office will continue to “explore our legal options.”
The White House praised the court’s ruling, calling the executive order’s provisions “common-sense measures.” Here’s a statement from White House spokesperson Lauren Bis:
