Pierre Gasly left Zandvoort with more than just frustration over Alpine’s missed opportunity, taking aim at Racing Bulls for tactics he believes deliberately compromised his Dutch Grand Prix.
Gasly had looked capable of another strong result at the seaside circuit after a highly competitive weekend in which he qualified eighth and finished eighth in Saturday’s Sprint.
Starting 11th for Sunday’s main event, the Alpine driver then made an excellent getaway to climb into eighth and put himself firmly in the fight for the best-of-the-rest honours.
His hopes of converting that pace into a strong finish, however, were badly dented during the middle phase of the race.
After his first pitstop, Gasly emerged behind Arvid Lindblad, whose own afternoon had effectively unravelled after a drive-through penalty for a yellow-flag infringement.
What followed was an increasingly exasperating traffic jam for Gasly. He spent seven laps trapped behind the Racing Bulls rookie before trying to go around the outside of Turn 11, locking up in the process and allowing Nico Hulkenberg through.
Yuki Tsunoda then joined the queue and eventually found a way past Gasly at Turn 7.
Lindblad, meanwhile, offered no resistance when his Racing Bulls teammate arrived, allowing Tsunoda through while Gasly continued to struggle behind him.
Gasly points the finger
It ultimately took Gasly 17 laps to clear Lindblad, costing him crucial time in a race where overtaking was notoriously difficult. The Alpine driver then encountered another Racing Bulls roadblock later in the race, finding himself behind Tsunoda following his second pitstop and needing another 10 laps to get past.
For Gasly, there was little doubt that Racing Bulls had played the Constructors’ championship game at his expense.
“VCARB ruined our race in the middle part of the race, played a team game for the championship and did it well,” Gasly lamented.
“I mean, it just made me lose a position to Nico and Tsunoda and I don't know how many seconds of race time. Congrats to them, and I can't wait to race them.”
The irony was that Racing Bulls gained nothing from the tactics in terms of the championship standings. Neither Tsunoda nor Lindblad scored points, finishing 11th and 12th respectively, while Gasly’s lost time proved costly in his own battle with Fernando Alonso.
Gasly eventually finished just one second behind the Aston Martin, having surrendered around four seconds while stuck behind Lindblad despite having fresher tyres. The subsequent delay behind Tsunoda further limited his chances of closing the gap to Alonso, who had managed to make a one-stop strategy work.
The Alpine driver was clearly not ready to forget the episode.
“It's just annoying, but it's Zandvoort,” Gasly added. “Can't really overtake, and this is going to change in the coming tracks. And good thing is I have a good memory, so I'm going to make sure we smile at the end of the year.”
Lindblad refuses to back down
Lindblad, for his part, showed little concern about Gasly’s warning when asked about the Frenchman’s comments.
The Racing Bulls rookie accepted that he had been part of his team’s strategy but saw nothing controversial in doing his job, particularly once his own hopes of scoring points had disappeared.
“I don't know. Yeah, that's a nice story. In the end, yeah, I played the team game. I don’t know.
“If he has a good memory, then fine. In the end, we all fight as hard as we can every weekend. I tried to help the team where I could. The reality was, my race, I wasn't really in it anymore, so yeah, I did what I could to help the team.”
That exchange adds another layer to an increasingly tight midfield battle.

With the championship fight between the two squads so finely balanced, Racing Bulls clearly had little incentive to make life easy for a direct rival. Gasly, meanwhile, has made it equally clear that he intends to remember the favour.
And with Zandvoort’s notoriously difficult overtaking characteristics no longer a factor at the next venues, the Frenchman may not have to wait particularly long for an opportunity to settle the score on track.
