BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Last year’s Section Five, Class A2 runner-up Brockport High School is building on three straight years of playoff improvement with a focus on physicality and toughness.
There’s a lotta talk at this time of the year, but at Brockport’s practice, it wasn’t about gloating or bragging. No, the Blue Devils tell their stories through action.
“We just talk about being physical, being tough. I think that’s the greatest compliment you can give anybody,” Coach Paul Carella said.
Carella is a smooth, honest talker on camera. In practice, he’s more of a wolf howling at the moon with his players following suit.
“Oh, he’s energetic. He’s a good coach,” said junior running back Wesley Childs. “I like him on the defensive end, he helps a lot. He knows everything and across the board at each position.”
At one point while instructing a defensive drill, Carella barked out, “God gave you hands to do what? Gave you arms. Wrap him so hard, you’re taking the breathe out of his lungs.”
“You know we’re poppin we’re hittin, we’re thudding,” said senior quarterback Mason Scott. “And we’re doing everything possible as early as possible.”
It’s a philosophy, or maybe better put, a way of life, that has worked for Carella’s team.
“We’ve lost first round. We lost second round last year. We lost in the section finals,” Scott said. “We wanna do what we can to hoist a trophy.”
Yeah, the Blue Devils were the seven-seed in the 2024 playoffs but upset #2 East in the first round. Last year, the Blue Devils got all the way to the Section V final, but lost to the Eagles. This group has been together and seen a lot of playoff success, knowing to win in November, you gotta show up in August.
“Everyone’s bumping the field, we’re hitting now and now it’s just getting better every practice. Lotta people moving now… different plays, it’s getting exciting every practice I like it,” Childs said.
“So we pride ourselves on being competitive, being prepared, being tough,” Carella said.
The Blue Devils are taking their preparation one step at a time. Scott made clear what the team’s goal is for the season.
“We wanna go out with a bang,” Scott said.
Brockport will play host to Pittsford on Friday, Sept. 4 to kick off their 2026 season.
