Children are just getting back to school and already illnesses are spreading.
A pediatrician at Northwestern Medicine calls this the “in between” season, but says, in addition to common coughs and colds, four illnesses are surging right now: G-I bugs; hand, foot and mouth disease; strep throat; and mono.
“Why is my child already sick? Because they’re exposed to so many kids suddenly,” said Dr. Anita Chandra-Puri.
“They’re sharing classrooms, crayons, pencils, coat racks, water bottles, all sorts of stuff. So, germs spread by contact,” she continued.
Dr. Chandra encourages good hygiene at home and in the classroom through frequent handwashing.
“With some of the younger children, I would even suggest changing out their clothes when they come home from school, because other kids’ snot and spit is all over them,” she said.
When it comes to deciding when children should stay home versus attend school, Dr. Chandra says always keep kids with a fever at home. Early coughing and feeling bad overall are more indicators to stay home.
“If it’s the 10th day of your cough, and it’s winding down, and you don’t have a fever, and you’re overall feeling better, that’s a different story.”
Flu shots are typically released in August and do not require a booster.
Dr. Chandra recommends her pediatric patients get vaccinated by Halloween.
The 2024-25 flu season was particularly severe. The CDC reported more than 280 pediatric flu deaths, a non-pandemic record since tracking began in 2007.
“The more people that get the vaccine, the less circulating flu there will be to begin with,” said Dr. Chandra.
“Sometimes it’s a perfect match. Sometimes it is not perfect, but even if you get some protection, that’s better than none.”
“Some of these respiratory viral vaccines, like the flu vaccine, they are supposed to help you prevent getting seriously ill from the flu,” said Chandra.
