The Cubs outscored the Mariners by 15 runs this weekend in Seattle and lost the series. Baseball.
The series outcome is inarguably bad, and at this stage of the season, lost games matter much more than any story you could tell about them. But it’s still my job to point out that the losses on Friday and Saturday, however maddening in the moment, were pure coin-flip losses. A play at third base here, and a millimeter move down the barrel there, or just a couple more hits with runners in scoring position, and those games go the other way. That the Cubs lost both is not really reflective of “Mariners good, Cubs bad.” But, as I said, the lost games is what matters most this time of year, with the Cubs 6.0 games back of the Brewers in the Central, and now clinging to a 2.0-game lead for the top Wild Card spot. They are now as far from the Brewers as they are from falling out of the three Wild Card spots entirely, for what that’s worth, and they’ll now head to Arizona to face that Diamondbacks team that’s just on the outside of the Wild Card picture. (And annoyed aside: the Cubs are 6.5 games ahead of the White Sox … who currently hold one of the two byes in the American League. What a fraudulent League the AL is this year.) Back to the win, though. You know it was a good day at the plate when just one starter had a hitless day, and that guy – Alex Bregman – nevertheless took two walks, scored twice, and drove in two. (Heck, every single guy who came in the game later and got a plate appearance as it was getting out of hand got a hit, too.) Ian Happ, whose grand slam would’ve been enough yesterday in the final accounting, has hit a few important homers in his career:Ian Happ's grand slam in the Cubs' win today was the 63rd go-ahead home run of his career, which ties him with Bill Nicholson for 9th most in franchise history.

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 24, 2026 Trent Thornton continues to get results, and, although the sample is not yet even 10 innings, I do want to note that his peripherals have also been outstanding since August 3: 30.0% K, 6.7% BB, 1.64 FIP. He’s notched at least one strikeout in eight of his last nine outings. He has started leaning much more heavily on his four-seamer of late (at the exclusion of the cutter), and it’s been up in velo, averaging almost 96 mph during this stretch. He was a good reliever for a long time, so maybe it just took a minute for him to get his feet fully back under him after the achilles injury. The Thornton we’ve seen of late? That’s a guy you’d want in late-innings. Technically, Bryce Miller HIMSELF didn’t lose these games by 17+:Mariners starter Bryce Miller did something not seen in MLB in 136 years in Seattle's 19-2 loss Sunday…He became the 1st pitcher since George Van Haltren of the 1890 Brooklyn Wonders to lose consecutive starts by at least 17 runs ?? pic.twitter.com/8WOY415wsX
— ESPN Insights (@ESPNInsights) August 24, 2026 The Randy Arozarena performance, coming right after PCA did it, is breaking my brain:There are 2 players in MLB history to hit a leadoff HR, a walk-off HR that same game, and then a leadoff HR the next game:Pete Crow-Armstrong: 8/17/26-8/18/26Randy Arozarena: 8/22/26-8/23/26The most unbelievable baseball coincidence of all-time. pic.twitter.com/D5OCy4Zed3
— AT (@BaseballWRLD_) August 23, 2026 The play didn’t REALLY matter, but clearly Gabriel Arias wanted to save Carson Kelly’s scoreless outing:Gabriel arias is elite. pic.twitter.com/9qew2fklXp
— ? (@MalortMatt) August 23, 2026 That throw is kinda nuts if you watch it again. It just kinda explodes across the diamond from a release that doesn’t look like he was putting everything into it. Also fun to get to see Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya meeting at the mound to celebrate a win. Quite unusual. Speaking of Kelly’s outing, it was the first Cubs position player pitching a scoreless inning in a win since a very famous game:Carson Kelly: first Cubs position player with a scoreless mound appearance in a Cubs win since John Baker in the "John Baker Game" 7/29/2014
— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) August 24, 2026John Baker (2014) #cubs Baker was the winning pitcher of the greatest game in cubs history. He pitched a scoreless top of the 16th and scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning, beating the Rockies 4-3 in the longest game in franchise history. 6 hours 27 minutes. pic.twitter.com/BIyoraWxL0
