Anne Archer has built a career around some of Hollywood’s most memorable roles.
The Oscar-nominated actress, best known for playing Beth Gallagher in the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction, turns 79 today, Aug. 24, 2026.
Born Aug. 24, 1947, in Los Angeles, Archer grew up in a Hollywood family. Her parents were actors John Archer and Marjorie Lord, and she eventually followed them into the entertainment business.
Archer began working in television before making her feature-film debut in the early 1970s. Her early credits included The Honkers, Cancel My Reservation, The All-American Boy and Trackdown.
But her biggest breakthrough came in 1987, when she was cast as Beth Gallagher, the wife of Michael Douglas‘ character, Dan Gallagher, in Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction.
The psychological thriller became one of the defining films of the decade, and Archer’s performance earned her nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Her career didn’t end with Fatal Attraction.
Archer went on to play Cathy Ryan opposite Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, bringing another memorable role to two films based on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan novels.
She also earned major recognition for Robert Altman’s 1993 ensemble drama Short Cuts. Her performance as Claire Kane won her a Golden Globe Award, adding another major honor to her résumé.
Archer continued working in both film and television over the following decades, with credits including The L Word, Boston Public, Ghost Whisperer, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Man of the House and The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.
Her stage career has also included a notable turn as Mrs. Robinson in the West End production of The Graduate, as well as work in productions including Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
Nearly four decades after Fatal Attraction first hit theaters, Archer remains best remembered for the role that earned her an Oscar nomination and helped cement her place in one of Hollywood’s most talked-about thrillers.
