PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) – Gail Mann is Nazareth women’s soccer. Since 1993, she has led the Golden Flyers program and accomplished as much as any coach could ever dream of.

378 wins ranks 21st all-time at the Division III level. 13 NCAA Tournaments is something Nazareth women’s soccer can forever be proud of. And through decades of coaching, countless athletes have gone on to have success after their athletics careers finished up.

Gail Mann resonates with that last part the most, especially the memories created along the way.

And when I say memories – I mean it. Current players voiced their favorite ones. Assistant coach Billy Stojanovski has been at coach Mann’s side for 28 years and wouldn’t have traded in one game for the experience he’s had with her. And now, coach Mann gets to create memories with one more team.

“I think it’s definitely special she chose our grade to be done with,” said senior Caitlyn Smithers.

But coach Mann really didn’t have a coach. There were a few factors in this being her last season, but one was outside of her control.

“My mom has dementia and I’ve been caring for her for the past year and its become challenging,” said Mann.

Mann’s mother has been along for the ride since the beginning – not just for the past 34 seasons. But she supported Mann’s decision to coach soccer full time since day one and has cheered her on from the sidelines ever since. Only now, she can’t do that in the same way.

“She’s not really able to come to games now,” said Mann. “We show her the highlights and stuff like that so she still feels a part of it.”

Mann says she doesn’t want the players to feel like they have to play any different just because it’s her last year. But it’s tough for a bunch of seniors who care for their coach not to feel that way.

“Let’s give it all for her. She did 34 years for us, now it’s time to give it back to her,” said senior Shannon Sgombick.

“Giving her our everything, because she’s poured her everything into this,” said senior Kiyomi Mastro.

As the seniors do that, Mann will also transition into pouring her everything from soccer, into caring for our mother.

“I wanted to be there for her and be able to do my best for her, because she was always there for me growing up, said Mann.

Gail Mann has always run the Nazareth women’s soccer program like a family. Only now, it’s time for her to focus on her actual family.
