ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As of 4:30pm on doppler radar, a cluster of storms packed with lightning and pockets of heavy rain are moving into Niagara, Erie, and Wyoming counties. A Yellow Alert remains in effect for this evening as a few of these storms may contain damaging straight-line winds, especially for counties west of Monroe County. Due to the slow northeastward progression of these storms, they are estimated to start impacting Orleans and Genesee counties between 5 and 6 pm before pushing into western Monroe County between 8 and 9 pm. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued by the Buffalo NWS Office for Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming Counties until 9 pm Saturday evening. A small craft advisory is also posted for along southern and eastern shores of Lake Ontario until 8 pm.
A very slow moving warm front continues to push through the Finger Lakes early this evening. Though dry air is present along this warm front, a small corridor of moist air will move across the region later Saturday evening. This will allow for a few of the scattered storms during the evening hours to develop damaging straight-line winds and pockets of heavy rainfall. The hail threat is expected to stay down in the western Southern Tier. If you have plans this evening outdoors, please stay up-to-date with any weather alerts and follow our updates on the free News10 First Alert Weather app.
Apart from the evening storms, temperatures Saturday night should stay in the low-60s as moist air keeps us from dropping into the 50s overnight. Some of these storms will continue long into the overnight hours. However, data is showing a significant weakening trend after 11pm. Winds will stay mainly out of the southwest during the first half of the night, before slowly moving out of the west towards Sunday morning. Sustained winds are expected between 10 to 20 mph with some gusts between 20 and 30 mph.
Storms should decrease in coverage substantially into Sunday morning. However, with the cold front slowly starting to enter the westernmost counties towards the morning hours of Sunday, scattered showers and storms may develop along this frontal boundary. Additionally, the stalling of the responsible area of low-pressure to our north, will continue to circulate very cool air over the lower Great Lakes. This will allow some lake effect showers and storms to remain in the forecast through the remainder of Sunday. Highs on Sunday will approach the mid-70s. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-50s overnight Sunday. Much cooler air is expected Monday with temperatures only topping out in the mid-to-upper 60s! A cool northwesterly wind through Monday will continue to bring scattered showers to start the workweek.
