It’s a later-than-normal start for yours truly on a Saturday. But with the Bears not playing until 6 p.m. CT, I figured I had some wiggle room to sleep in and make breakfast for a friend before diving into this Saturday batch of BN Bears Bullets.
With the starters set to sit on the sidelines for both the Bears and Bengals, colleague Patrick K. Flowers has five players to watch during Saturday’s exhibition showdown in Cincinnati. I realize that not everyone wants to lock in for preseason football. And that’s OK, because we will watch it so you don’t have to … just be sure to come back on Sunday for insight, analysis, and some fun along the way when we recap the game. Over at the Bears’ official website, Larry Mayer has six Bears players to watch in Saturday’s preseason game. Among them is rookie tight end Sam Roush. This quote from Offensive Coordinator Press Taylor feels telling to me:“Sam made his presence felt in the run game, which is something we wanted to see. I think there’s still opportunities to grow in the pass game. He had a ball come his way that we would have probably liked to see a better ball, but we talked through with Sam the coaching points of how we could potentially run the route a little bit better. And that’s something that’s just going to continue to grow and expand in his game.”

I remember the Bears wanting more from Colston Loveland as a run-blocker early in his development as a rookie tight end last year, before expanding his role as the season progressed. To be clear, I’m not saying Roush will follow in Loveland’s footsteps. This isn’t a one-for-one comp I’d be comfortable making. Even if it was, I know it would be a mighty tall ask. But I see a path to Roush’s playing time being a slow burn tied to how he performs as a run blocker. “No block, no rock” applies to all of Chicago’s pass catchers. Browns cornerback Nate Evans (43) breaks up a pass intended for Bears tight end Sam Roush (87) during the first half at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Training camp darling Kaden Davis is on Sun-Times reporter Jason Lieser’s list of three Bears with a lot on the line in Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Bengals. In addition to a strong training camp showing, the wide receiver put out some good tape in the preseason win against the Browns. Not only were his 4 catches and 88 yards in the first half impressive, but his run blocking also caught his coaches’ attention. I think he has a shot at making the roster if he keeps it up. At a minimum, he will make it a tough decision for the decision-makers at Halas Hall. And sometimes, that is all you can ask for this time of year. Offensive tackle Theo Benedet makes Tribune reporter Phil Thompson’s list of 10 players to watch on Saturday. With Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. sliding to the right side of the line, Benedet joined the fray at left tackle this week. Benedet played 524 snaps at left tackle during the 2025 regular season. My takeaway from his performance is that his pass protection needs work, but I still like what he is working with overall. If he can prove that he has made some gains as a pass blocker, it would go a long way toward locking down a roster spot. Top center options and potential NHL expansion to a pair of cities in the South are among the topics Tab Bamford tackles in Saturday BN Blackhawks Bullets. DeMar DeRozan joining the Denver Nuggets isn’t something I really saw coming. Hope it works out with him and perennial MVP candidate Nikola Jokic. DeRozan was a two-time All-Star with the Bulls. It is a shame things didn’t work out better for those teams.
