Top Center Options, NHL Expanding in Houston and Atlanta? and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Kalen Lumpkins at the Chicago Tribune made the cases for Anton Frondell and Frank Nazar to be the Blackhawks’ No. 1 center until Connor Bedard returns from injury. The one name I’ll throw into the mix that hasn’t been talked about or considered much outside of this space is Roman Kantserov. Remember: he played center primarily in Russia. There’s a chance he could see some action down the middle if he shows he’s more comfortable there early in camp.

I’ll note again that Kantserov and Frondell are left-handed while Nazar and Bedard are right-handed. They could ultimately complement each other — and take faceoffs on their dominant side to help each other out. Keep an eye on that when we get into training camp.

Frank Nazar or Anton Frondell? A case for each to center Chicago Blackhawks top line without Connor Bedard. t.co/gJXisEJK7K

— Chicago Tribune (@chicagotribune) August 21, 2026 Corey Pronman is having a rough week, so I’m not going to waste a lot of time on his latest article at The Athletic in which he projects the 2030-31 NHL standings. He ranks the Blackhawks 17th in the league. If you want to read his opinion-based why, go ahead. I’m going to lean more toward the analytical projections-based Paul Pidutti and his updated 2030 projections from earlier this week. The only thing I will say is Pronman writes the 9th-ranked Lightning “have just enough in their system between Conor Geekie, Sam O’Reilly and Benjamin Rautiainen to bridge the two eras” while ranking Geekie (63), O’Reilly (40) and Rautiainen (81) all below both Kantserov (37) and Nazar (39) in his under-23 rankings. Here’s how he rated the skills of Kantserov… but Pronman is “not sold there’s enough high-end in this [Blackhawks] group to be more than a consistent wild-card threat.” David Alter of The Hockey News sat down with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly during the league’s European Media Tour stop in Munich and made it clear that the NHL is expanding sooner than later, and the front runners to get a new team are Houston and Atlanta.

“We have agreed on the framework of a transaction, and we’re all working to get toward that,” Daly said. “We hope to have definitive agreements in place that would commit the franchise as early as December this year. And we expect that they’ll be able to begin play as early as the 2029-30 season, closing the transaction early 2029.”

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly provided an update on where things stand in expansion talks with Houston having a “priority” over Austin. I also asked him what it would take for the league to ever consider Canada for expansion again. t.co/xkskWVoeXo
