1977 Linda Ronstadt Album, With a No. 3 Billboard Smash, Dethroned Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

In late 1977, Fleetwood Mac‘s Rumours seemed completely unshakeable at the top of the Billboard 200, until Linda Ronstadt pulled off one of the biggest chart upsets in rock history.

Having spent a staggering 29 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1, the pop-rock juggernaut had effectively locked down the charts for nearly seven months. That unbroken streak came to a dramatic halt when Ronstadt released Simple Dreams.

Powered by her iconic, Grammy-nominated cover of Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou,” which climbed all the way to No. 3 on the Hot 100, Ronstadt pulled off the ultimate chart topple. She dethroned Rumours the week of December 3, 1977, cementing her reign as the undisputed queen of the album charts.

Rhino Records reported the feat in a story discussing Ronstadt’s Living in the USA LP. They wrote, “By the year 1978, Linda Ronstadt was a bona fide music superstar. The singer’s 1977 release, Simple Dreams, was a massive success, big enough to knock Fleetwood Mac’s monster record Rumours from the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in December of that year, holding the top position for the rest of ’77.”

Simple Dreams would have an 11-week chart run, and hold the top spot for five. The triple-platinum blockbuster cemented Ronstadt’s status as the only solo artist in 1977 capable of breaking Fleetwood Mac’s stranglehold on the charts.

Additionally, the LP became Ronstadt’s fifth consecutive platinum album. It was a record-setting seller for a female recording artist at the time, according to Acoustic Sounds,  selling more than three and one-half million copies in less than a year.

The LP included a country song recorded with Dolly Parton (“I Never Will Marry”), covers of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison hits (“It’s So Easy” and “Blue Bayou”), and songs from Warren Zevon (“Poor Poor Pitiful Me”) and The Rolling Stones (“Tumbling Dice”).

Additionally, Simple Dreams knocked Elvis Presley‘s Elvis in Concert album out of the number-one spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart around the same time, in late 1977. Presley’s double LP was his first posthumous release, recorded during his final tour in June 1977 and tied to a CBS television special.

Ultimately, unseating Rumours wasn’t just a win for Ronstadt. It showed the sheer impact of her voice at a time when bands dominated rock and roll. Although Fleetwood Mac created a landmark record, Linda Ronstadt gave the world an album that was every bit as unforgettable and set the stage for female rockers to step into their own spotlight in the years to come.
