U.S. Olympian and LCM World Championship silver medalist Phoebe Bacon has announced that she will move to Charlottesville, Virginia to train with the Virginia pro group. Bacon makes the move after previously staying as a post-grad at her alma mater Wisconsin.
“I wish I could put into words everything Wisconsin means to me — unfortunately words alone cannot convey the love I have for Madison and the lifelong memories I have created over these last six years. Wisconsin gave me so much more than a place to train and compete. I found a home with teammates who are now family, and coaches who challenged me, pushed me, and believed in me to help me be the swimmer and person I am today. I am incredibly grateful to Yuri, Jack, and Jennah and the entire coaching staff, who invested in me over these six years. I would not be where I am today without the countless hours you all put in to help me be the best version of myself. Wisconsin will always be a huge part of my story. I’m so proud of everything we accomplished together, and even more grateful for everything this place has given me. And just as there is a time for everything in life, it’s now time for a new chapter for me. I’m incredibly excited for what’s ahead as I move to Charlottesville, VA – a place very close to home and my family. And I’m ready to begin working alongside my friends at UVA. Thank you Wisconsin! Forever a Badger.”

Bacon makes the move closer to home as she is originally from Chevy Chase, Maryland, about a two to two and a half hour drive from Charlottesville. She arrived at Wisconsin in fall 2020 and spent her collegiate career with the Badgers.
She made her Olympic debut in 2021 at the 2020(1) Tokyo Olympics where she swam to 5th in the 200 backstroke in a lifetime best 2:06.40. She returned to representing the US at the 2022 World Championships where she won silver in the 200 back in a 2:05.12.
Back in 2023, she just missed making the World Championship roster as she was 5th in the 200 back, missing the team for the U.S. by just 0.82 seconds. She also was 6th in the 200 IM and 8th in the 100 back at 2023 US Nationals.
She returned to the 2024 Paris Olympics where she swam to a 4th place finish in the 200 back touching in a 2:05.61, just 0.04 off of earning a medal. Last summer, she had a strong swim in the 200 IM at 2025 U.S. Nationals to touch 2nd, punching her ticket to the 2025 World Championships in the event where she went on to finish 13th. She most recently swam at the 2026 Pan Pac Championships where she was highlighted by ‘B’ final wins in the 200 IM (2:09.45) and 200 back (2:07.02).
The 24 year old makes the move to a strong backstroke group that already includes names such as Sara Curtis, Isabelle Stadden, and Claire Curzan. Curtis most recently set a World Record in the LCM 50 back while Stadden sits as the top American in the 200 back this season (2:04.37), and Curzan won silver in the 200 back at the 2026 Pan Pac Championships (2:06.44). Stadden, a Cal graduate, made the move to Charlottesville in December 2025 and has since gone major lifetime bests in all three backstroke events.
