We’re coming off an action-packed week of racing that saw no shortage of phenomenal swims, breakthrough performances and massive upsets with the European Championships and Pan Pacific Championships running simultaneously.
We ran two polls last week, asking readers what the biggest surprise was across the two meets through Wednesday, and then following up with another asking what shocked them the most from the back-end of the two competitions on Monday.
POLL #1
Question: What was the most surprising result from the first three days of Euros + Day 1 of Pan Pacs?
RESULTS
Sara Curtis shatters W 50 BK WR – 32.9% Euro M 100 free podium 46.87 or faster – 31.0% Pallister tops McIntosh in W 200 free – 10.3% Berkoff upsets Smith in W 100 back – 7.4% Two US men sub-1:44 in 200 free – 6.9% Kos textile WR, #2 performance ever in 200 BK – 5.2% 22.75 required to make Euro M 50 fly final – 3.4% Steenbergen – 50.87 for fastest women’s split ever – 2.0% USA shatters mixed medley relay WR – 1.0%In the first poll, Sara Curtis‘ stunning world record swim in the women’s 50 backstroke came out on top with 32.9% of votes, edging out the blistering field in the men’s 100 freestlye at the European Championships.
In the semis of the women’s 50 back at Euros, Curtis unleashed a time of 26.63, shattering Kaylee McKeown‘s world record of 26.86 by nearly a quarter of a second. It also marked the first world record swim in long course women’s backstroke from a swimmer not named McKeown or Regan Smith since 2018, adding to its shock value.
The poll was released shortly before Curtis re-broke the world record in the final in a time of 26.56
A close runner-up to Curtis was the fact that a time of 46.87 was required to make the podium in the men’s 100 free at Euros, marking the first time it took sub-47 to win a medal.
David Popovici won his highly anticipated showdown with Egor Kornev in a time of 46.56, the third-fastest performance ever, while Kornev became the third-fastest performer of all-time en route to claiming silver in 46.74.
The biggest surprise was Kristof Milak in 3rd, as the Hungarian butterfly star dropped a time of 46.87 to round out the podium and become the fifth-fastest swimmer ever, lowering his previous best time (47.47) by six-tenths of a second.
The fact that the 11th-fastest performance ever was required to make the podium—prior to the heat, 46.87 would’ve been ninth all-time—earned 31.0% of votes, trailing Curtis by less than 2%.
Lani Pallister‘s upset victory over Summer McIntosh in the women’s 200 free at the Pan Pacific Championships was the other option in the poll that eclipsed 10% of votes, earning 10.3%. The two entered the meet with identical best times of 1:53.65, but given that McIntosh’s PB came from 2023 and she hadn’t raced the 200 free at a major international meet since then, the majority was backing her to win gold and challenge the 1:53 barrier.
POLL #2
Question: What was the most surprising result from the back half of Euros + Days 2-4 of Pan Pacs?
RESULTS
Douglass massive 50 free world record – 36.5% Liebmann massive 1500 free world record – 33.2% McIntosh misses 400 free final – 23.0% Pallister beats Ledecky in 800 free – 3.3% Douglass 51.69 100 free lead-off – 1.5% Sub-50 podium in 100 fly at Euros – 1.1% Marchand wins 400 free gold – 0.7% Short breaks Hackett’s 25-year-old AUS record in 1500 – 0.4% Knedla upsets Kolesnikov in 50 back – 0.4%The craziness kicked into another gear as we moved towards the weekend, as two mind-boggling world records fell by the wayside while McIntosh shockingly missed out on cracking an ‘A’ final at Pan Pacs.
Leading the poll with 36.5% of votes was what Kate Douglass did in the women’s 50 free at Pan Pacs, as she broke Gretchen Walsh‘s world record of 23.55 in the prelims in a time of 23.49, and then obliterated the final in a time of 23.19.
The swim made Douglass a whopping 36 one-hundredths of a second (1.53%) faster than the #2 performer of all-time, Walsh, establishing it as one of the most dominant world records in history.
Closely trailing Douglass’ world record in the poll was the one dropped by Johannes Liebmann, as the German phenom put up a time of 14:26.79 in the men’s 1500 free at Euros to become the first swimmer under the 14:30 barrier.
The 19-year-old lowered his previous best time by 13 seconds, crushing Bobby Finke‘s world record of 14:30.67 from 2024.
Liebmann sits 0.44% ahead of the #2 performer ever in the event, making it less dominant than Douglass’ (1.53%) despite him knocking nearly four seconds off the record.
Curtis’ 50 back record, for reference, puts her 1.12% faster than #2 all-time McKeown.
Liebmann picked up 33.2% of votes, while McIntosh surprisingly missing the final of the women’s 400 free at Pan Pacs earned 23%. The world record holder, McIntosh’s miss looked like more of a miscalculation than it was her form being way off, but still, in a meet where swimmers qualifying for the ‘A’ final looked relatively easy for the non-Americans, it was a stunner.
