In our modern world, convenience is everything. From the way we shop to the timely manner in which things are delivered to our homes, if convenience isn’t a big part of the equation, there’s less reason to spend your hard-earned money.
Which brings us to Walmart and the recent announcement of some major changes that shoppers say should have been implemented a long time ago. Starting Aug. 24, Tap to Pay is finally coming to Walmart and Sam’s Club stores nationwide, effectively joining thousands of other retailers in the modern age.

The best thing about modern checkout lines is the option to either do self-checkout or deal with an actual cashier. The second best thing is Tap to Pay. Truly one of the most convenient inventions of our time, being able to pay by tapping your phone or credit card not only makes checking out more seamless, it also adds to the hands-free experience that makes shopping even more stress-free.
The thing is, Walmart has historically been behind the game when it comes to contactless payments, making this first step toward a better checkout system even more monumental. Starting Aug. 24, the retail giant will begin adding Tap to Pay to select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026. In addition, all fuel stations will also be upgraded with Tap to Pay by mid-2027.

By making the checkout process more in line with where retail is in our modern age, Walmart is effectively giving customers and members another familiar way to pay for groceries, gifts and everyday essentials. Not only that, customers and members with eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards can also add them to their digital wallets, giving shoppers the choice to use Tap to Pay with either their phone or card.
With convenience being a top priority for customers, Tap to Pay is likely to become a worthwhile investment for Walmart and Sam’s Club as a whole, despite being a bit late to the game. In addition to other payment methods already offered at Walmart, including cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay, customers will now be able to enjoy even more flexibility while shopping for the things they need.
