Kimi Antonelli emerged from Friday’s Sprint qualifying only 0.227 seconds off Mercedes team-mate George Russell’s pole time, but the championship leader revealed afterwards that his fight for the front was compromised by damage sustained almost immediately.
Antonelli will start Saturday’s Sprint from fifth after an off at the penultimate corner during his opening SQ1 run sent his Mercedes across the gravel.
What initially looked like a minor mistake proved considerably more costly, with the Italian forced to carry significant floor damage for the remainder of the session.
A costly early mistake
The incident came after Antonelli carried slightly too much speed into the final corner sequence and lost the rear of his W17.
Once back in the pits, Mercedes discovered holes in the floor and attempted to repair the damage before sending him back out.
"I had a couple of holes in the floor [after the off]," he told Sky Sports.
"So when I came in, they initially said it was a loss of 25 points. They tried to repair as much as possible, but the damage was still there. I was struggling a lot at low speed. It is what it is."
Antonelli accepted responsibility for the incident, but admitted that rebuilding his confidence afterwards was another hurdle.
"There was a little bit too much entry speed in the last corner in that lap one, and I lost the rear and went through the gravel. That was pretty much it.
"Obviously, it was not easy to build the confidence back, but still decently close, and we'll have another go tomorrow.
"We'll try to do the best race we can. Obviously, it's very close at the front, so it's not going to be easy to overtake, but we'll try to do the best we can, even with the damage. Then from qualifying, we're going to tidy the car up and go again."
Mercedes counts the cost
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed the scale of the setback, although the team managed to patch the damaged floor sufficiently for Antonelli to remain competitive.
"We lost 20 points with a hole in the floor for Kimi, but we managed to patch it up, and it looked like it was completely intact afterwards,” he explained.
"It's so close, the gaps are so tiny, and he made a little bit of a mistake into turn 11, pushing it too hard on the entry, and it [the time] can go quickly.”
Despite the handicap, Antonelli still reached SQ3 and finished ahead of Max Verstappen, with only Russell, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri ahead of him.
With the floor set to be repaired properly before Sprint qualifying, the championship leader has at least one reason for optimism: his fifth-place starting position may not tell the full story of his potential pace at Zandvoort.
