Tonight, Bo Nix is back.
The Denver Broncos have their starting quarterback in the lineup for the first time since he broke his ankle in January vs. Buffalo in the Divisional Round win.
It’s only preseason, but Nix’s return is welcomed by Broncos Country.
Bo Nix is back for Denver Broncos tonight
The Broncos welcome the Green Bay Packers to Empower Field at Mile High Stadium tonight in a rematch of Super Bowl XXXII.
That game featured two of the greatest quarterbacks of the 90s in Brett Favre and John Elway.
This preseason game features two young QBs on the rise: Jordan Love and Bo Nix.
It’s also a rematch from last season, the Broncos signature win of the year, when Nix and Co. beat Love and the Pack.
The most important aspect is that Nix is back under center tonight for his first game action since breaking his ankle vs. the Bills.
How much will Nix play?
Quarterbacks are always the focal point of NFL teams. But Nix will be even more so tonight as he plays around two drives with the Denver offense.
“We’ll look at the pitch count, maybe similar to last week for him with that 14-snap count,” Payton said of how much his quarterback will play. “When we do that tonight, we go through each phase and who might be the early outs and then who might play a little bit more.”
The goal for Bo and the O is to have some success against a strong defensive unit. For him to complete some passes to Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims and Co. What about Jaylen Waddle?
“He’s gradually getting to… I don’t want to say 100%. But you’re always mindful of someone with his explosion that you don’t re-aggrevate his initial injury. But he’s doing good,” Payton said of the superstar wide receiver who Denver signed this offseason.
On Wednesday, Waddle caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Nix in practice. But it’s unknown whether or not the veteran wideout will play tonight or not.
The most-important thing for Nix is to not get injured again. While still getting back comfortable with game action.
“I’m super excited,” Nix said of tonight’s game. “It’s always a blast to play at home. It’s great to get in front of our fans. It’ll be fun to get out there for the first time this year, put the pads on, and go out there and play a game. For me, all the games feel the same, and so it’ll be good to get some work in.”
Last year, the Packers defense was 11th in points allowed and 11th in passing yards allowed. Of course, that was with Micah Parsons causing havoc in the backfield against quarterbacks. Parsons was injured in the Broncos win over the Packers last year, when he tore his ACL. He won’t be playing tonight and won’t be back until mid-October.
So, Nix won’t have to contend with him.
But he and the Broncos offense will play against the rest of the Pack defense with the game kicking off at 7 p.m. MT tonight. The game will be televised on 9News.
