Just weeks before his death, Kyle seemed fine on the surface. He finished eighth in a Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on Sunday, May 10, while battling what everyone believed was just a sinus cold. Five days later, on Friday, May 15, he won a Craftsman Truck Series race in Dover, Delaware.
Then, while practicing in a racing simulator days after that win, everything changed. “The crew chief said that he went into the restroom and that he could hear him coughing very, very abruptly, and that he asked Kyle, like, ‘You all right?'” Kurt recalled.
“And Kyle says, ‘No.’ And he’s sitting there just on the floor, back up against the wall, and the crew chief said that he saw blood in the sink. And he goes, ‘You don’t look so good.’ And Kyle said, ‘No.'”
What Did Kurt Busch Witness at the Hospital?
Fox News reported that an ambulance rushed Kyle to the hospital. His family initially announced he’d miss his next race due to a “severe illness.” Hours later, he was gone.
“I was there at the hospital, all day,” Kurt said. “Hoping. Praying. Hoping for a turnaround. It’s just everything had plateaued so fast. It just escalated so fast. And so I don’t explain it to people, I don’t. What I saw, what I went through, nobody needs to go through that.”
Kurt said their father chose not to see Kyle in that state. “My dad wanted to remember him in the way he wanted to remember him,” Kurt told Melvin.
“So people could choose if they wanted to or not.” Kurt did see his brother, holding onto him until the end. “I said, ‘I got you man. Come on. I got you. I got you, come on. Be strong,'” he recalled, wiping away tears. “Just wasn’t fair.”
How Is Kurt Busch Honoring His Brother’s Legacy?
Kyle’s cause of death was later confirmed as sepsis, following days to weeks of undiagnosed bacterial pneumonia, according to his death certificate, according to ESPN. Three days later, NASCAR paid tribute to him in front of 95,000 fans at the Coca-Cola 600. His widow, Samantha Busch, thanked fans for their support in an Instagram post on Friday, June 5.
