Kim Cattrall is everything. An actress, author, producer, theater star, advocate for women’s empowerment, and all-around ageless baddie, she’s also a birthday girl today. The multi-hyphenate screen legend turns 70.

Born Aug. 21, 1956, in Liverpool, England, Kim Victoria Cattrall grew up in Canada, returning to England briefly at age 11 before eventually moving to New York City at 16 to pursue acting.

In 1975, she made her film debut in Otto Preminger’s Rosebud, which led to a contract with Universal Pictures that proved fruitful the following decade.

An ’80s comedy icon, Cattrall starred in a string of funny films including Porky’s (1982), Police Academy (1984), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), and Mannequin (1987). The steady output of popular movies helped establish her singular on- and off-screen glamour, stellar comedic timing, and mainstream visibility.

At 41, Cattrall entered the role that would redefine her career.

Playing Samantha Jones, the patron saint of style and unapologetic autonomy, on HBO’s Sex and the City (1998-2004), Cattrall scored five Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe. She reprised the iconic character in two feature films (2008, 2010), then returned for a blink-and-you’d-miss-it cameo in the second season of the spinoff, And Just Like That.

Beyond the screen, Cattrall pursued stage work, including Broadway and West End productions. She starred in a revival of Private Lives and Antony and Cleopatra. Meanwhile, she continued to light up the small screen with roles in Queer as Folk, How I Met Your Father, Filthy Rich, and more.

Over the years, Cattrall’s roles allowed her to share the screen with bona fide pop and rock stars. From playing Britney Spears’ mother in Crossroads (2002) to working alongside Miley Cyrus and Liza Minnelli in Sex and the City 2 (2010), Cattrall has crossed paths with plenty of music royalty.

But in 2016, she took her connection to music a step further.

In 2016, Cattrall joined Van Morrison onstage at the 25th Annual Aspects Festival in Northern Ireland, where she gave an intimate spoken-word performance of “Someone Like You” and “Meaning of Loneliness,” while Van the Man backed her on the acoustic guitar. The literary-themed event celebrated Morrison’s songwriting and his 2014 lyrics collection, Lit Up Inside.

Cattrall’s performance was later described as “spellbinding” and hailed as a “literary delight.”

A massive fan of the Grammy-winning musician, Cattrall later took to social media to share her excitement about the collaboration. Posting a photo with the singer, she shared that meeting her hero “exceeded” her expectations and called him “the one and only.”

Today, Cattrall is prioritizing a career of selective and stress-free projects while enjoying newly married life with Russell Thomas, whom she met in 2016 during an appearance on BBC’s Woman’s Hour.

“Kim has taken over, and not the characters she’s played, in a very definite way,” she told People last December. “The last 10 years have been more about exploring me, not connected to my work, but my own choices.”

Happy birthday, Kim!
